having to lift up the heavy adapter chuck unit so you can put it onto your rotor that's sitting on the bench. Next you have to find the chuck key and then tighten equally the three jaws while pressing down on the entire assembly, to keep it flat and aligned. Finally, you have to pick up the now extremely heavy chuck adapter plus the rotor and place it onto your brake lathe, carefully and slowly, so you don't bend the expensive arbor and ruin the machine. Oh don't forget you will also need to disassemble the chuck every month or so to clean the jaws and gear assembly, then spend 30 minutes reassembling it. If you don't, the cutting chips that build up in the teeth every time you use it, will eventually break them or stop them from moving easily.

That's a lot of back breaking and worrisome work to perform, just to cut brake rotors !!!

Extreme Duty 4-Spring Silencer Band System. Each spring is packed with a dense Neoprene rod to accept maximum vibrations and harmonics. This is the best silencer on the planet! Throw out that old style rubber band with lead weights, they actually create an out of balance condition that produces higher final finish roughness numbers.
(Just try this little experiment if you think there is no reason to switch. Grab a rotor, slap it on a lathe and the wrap your rubber band silencer with lead weights around it, as you normally do. Now look at the rotor from a side view and focus on the part of the rubber silencer band that over laps. Notice that there is rubber overlapping but more importantly, but of most importance is the extra lead in this area. Simple physics will tell you your rotor is now out of balance! Flexible surface hones for rotors utilize high tech patented technology to produce the ideal surface finish on automotive and motorcycle disc brake rotors, automotive fly wheels and clutch plates. Sandpaper, scotch pads, swirl discs, grinding pads or the like all damage the surface because they are following your hands motion, this creates microscopic dips and grooves in the rotor. Remember, this is the rotor you just spent 10 minutes cutting, trying to create a straight, parallel surface with .001" tolerances.

Here is the bottom line... You must apply a Cross-Hatched finish to the rotor that approaches the required 40 to 42 Ra final surface. Note that this is not the Non-Directional one you have been taught is right, when someone says Non-Directional they are misunderstanding the metal machining process for cast iron. Compare the finish on a engine's cylinder wall, after it's re-bored and before you put in new pistons. Would you ever think of using a piece of sandpaper or scotch pad to scratch up the walls to create a proper break-in finish?

This is the item we talk about in every seminars we do... to check rotors you must have equipment that can measure run out (warpage) both on the vehicle and on the lathe. Simply mount the magnet base on a steel surface (lathe or caliper mounting area) and point the indicator to the surface you want to check..
